Nontoxic Home-Made Carpet Cleaners

Posted on

The "danger" and "caution" labels on commercial carpet cleaning shampoos should have you worried. Frequent exposure to the chemicals in carpet cleaners can have severe health consequences. These chemicals also harm the environment. If you are looking for an alternative to commercial carpet cleaners, you will be delighted to note that you can prepare your own cleaners with ingredients that you already have at home. These cleaners are effective, cheap and safe for use. Learn how to make nontoxic carpet cleaners and how to clean your carpets.

Baking Soda Shampoo

Baking soda works as an excellent cleaning agent because it's a mild alkali. It causes grease and dirt to dissolve in water easily for effective removal. It also makes a good deodorizing agent because it has the ability to neutralize odors. Most odors are a result of strong bases or strong acids. Due to its mild alkaline nature, baking soda brings acids and bases to a neutral odor-free state. You can make a deodorizing shampoo by mixing water with baking soda. For light cleaning, you can make the mixture thin in such a way that you spray it from a spray bottle. For stain removal and spot treatment, make a thicker mixture and dab the paste onto the carpet. Baking soda is a pure and non-toxic product, making it safe for use around pets and children.

Dry Cleaners

For a dry treatment, mix borax or baking soda with corn meal in equal parts. Sprinkle this mixture onto your carpets and rugs. You can allow the mixture to sit for several hours. Cornmeal will help lift dirt from the carpet and will also disperse the baking soda or borax. After the mixture has set in, simply vacuum the carpet and you will notice a bigger difference than if you had simply vacuumed the carpet.

Spot Treatment

You can prepare various homemade formulas to deal with various stains. To deal with an ink stain on your carpet, sprinkle some cream of tartar onto the stain and allow it to set in. After a few minutes apply some freshly squeezed lemon juice and press it over the stain. Repeat this process until the stain comes off. Clean the spot with a damp sponge ad leave it to dry. Club soda can be dabbed on carpets to remove chocolate and blood stains.

As evidenced, you can create your own inexpensive rug and carpet cleaners with cheap and easily available ingredients. If these methods don't work though, it may be time to call the professionals, like Majestic Rug Cleaning Co. Inc.
